Our Middletown-Norwalk project is currently under construction in Connecticut. When it is placed in service in 2009, it will complete a loop in southwest Connecticut connecting that area to the nearly 400 miles of 345-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines that already run through the rest of the state. The Bethel-Norwalk project, completed in 2006 ahead of schedule and under budget, is another piece of the southwest Connecticut "loop."

In order to further improve the reliability of service to customers in southwest Connecticut and to bring the Stamford/Greenwich area the benefits of approved and proposed new power sources in Norwalk, CL&P is constructing the Glenbrook Cables Project — new 115-kV underground transmission lines from Norwalk to our Glenbrook Substation in Stamford.

And we are replacing seven fluid-filled transmission cables running between Norwalk, Connecticut and Northport, New York with three solid-core cables. These replacement cables will improve reliability to Connecticut and reduce environmental impacts resulting from damage to the existing cables.

The Central Connecticut Reliability Project and the Greater Springfield Reliability Project are two of four major projects that are part of the New England East-West Solution (NEEWS). Construction is planned to begin in 2010 and will last through 2013. These projects, along with the Interstate Reliability Project, will strengthen the reliability of the power grid in New England, improving its efficiency and eliminating costly bottlenecks.
