CL&P has installed a new 345-kilovolt (kV)/115-kV substation on CL&P-owned property that straddles the Killingly/Putnam town line, near the Killingly and Putnam Industrial Parks.

This project provides a new connection between the 345-kV and 115-kV transmission systems in northeast Connecticut and resolves critical reliability concerns for the state's eastern region.

Northeast Connecticut Reliability Project, Killingly 2G Substation
Project focus:Build a new 345-kV/115-kV substation to strengthen the transmission system.
Municipalities affected:Killingly, Putnam.
Cost: $29 million
Regulatory review by: The Connecticut Siting Council and the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.
Timetable:
  • Regulatory approval received July 2005.
  • Construction began in late 2005
  • In service as scheduled on December 16, 2006
