Middletown to Norwalk, CT

The Connecticut Siting Council has unanimously approved Connecticut Light and Power's (CL&P) and United Illuminating's (UI) project to extend Connecticut's existing 345-kilovolt (kV) transmission system from Middletown to Norwalk. The current system serving southwest Connecticut does not meet national electric reliability standards. Southwest Connecticut is the only part of the region not currently served by a 345-kV transmission system. The state-approved route is the most technically feasible, environmentally sound and cost-effective solution to address the region's energy needs.

Route length:69 miles
Municipalities along proposed route:Bethany, Bridgeport, Cheshire, Durham, Fairfield, Haddam, Hamden, Meriden, Middlefield, Middletown, Milford, Norwalk, Orange, Stratford, Wallingford, West Haven, Westport, and Woodbridge.
Other municipalities affected: New Haven (within 2500 feet of proposed structures in Orange); North Haven (within 2500 feet of proposed structures in Wallingford)
Line voltage: 345,000 volts (345-kV); plus reinforcement and reconstruction of existing 115-kV (115,000 volts) equipment. Read more about technology of the M-N project.
Cost: Estimated $837-993 million.
Regulatory review by: The Connecticut Siting Council, Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control, ISO New England, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Army Corps of Engineers
Timetable:
  • Regulatory review began May, 2003
  • Siting Council approval April 7, 2005
  • Estimated in-service date, December, 2009
