What's Being Built in Durham

Note that the descriptions below are typical designs for your area and do not represent the specific structure design and height being constructed on the right of way on your property. For property-specific information, call our Project Hotline at 1-866-MID-NORW (643-6679). Detailed design plans can also be obtained from your town hall or from the Connecticut Siting Council.

Overhead Lines
In Durham, the original overhead right of way (ROW) covers a total distance of 5 miles. The right of way that begins at Oxbow Junction in Haddam and parallels the Middlefield town line is 125 feet wide. The two wood H-Frames are being replaced with a single steel monopole (typical height, 135 feet) that will carry both the new 345-kV circuit and the existing 115-kV circuit.

In their April 5, 2005, decision, the Connecticut Siting Council (CSC) ordered customized placement and structure height for two neighborhoods (Powder Hill Road/Skeet Club Road/Elihu Drive and Arbutus Street/Johnson Lane/Foot Hills Road areas) to reduce magnetic fields. In these neighborhoods, structure heights range from 140' to 185'. They also ordered a 1.2 mile bypass around the Royal Oaks neighborhood for the new 345-kV line. The 115-kV line will remain on the present ROW.

Royal Oaks Bypass
Segment 1b consists of a 1.2-mile overhead segment of the proposed 345-kV transmission line that will be re-routed from the existing CL&P 115-kV corridor as a bypass to the Royal Oaks Subdivision (Royal Oak). This segment of the new 345-kV line is routed through the towns of Middletown (0.5 miles) and Middlefield (0.7 miles).

This segment of the new 345-kV begins at a location within the existing 115-V right of way (ROW) approximately 300 feet east of Royal Oak near the Durham-Middletown town line. The bypass angles northwest around the north side of Royal Oaks through the town of Middletown, across South Main Street (Route 17) into the town of Middlefield, and turns south to rejoin the existing 115-kV corridor just inside the Durham town line approximately 400 feet west of Royal Oak.

The new 345-kV line will be supported on delta-configured tubular steel monopole structures with a typical height of 85 feet. This segment will require a new 125-foot-wide right of way.
