What's Being Built in Wallingford

Note that the descriptions below are typical designs for your area and do not represent the specific structure design and height being constructed on the right of way on your property. For property-specific information, call our Project Hotline at 1-866-MID-NORW (643-6679). Detailed design plans can also be obtained from your town hall or from the Connecticut Siting Council.

Overhead Lines
In Wallingford, the overhead right of way (ROW) covers a total distance of 11.5 miles and consists of five different structure configurations. The section that runs between Beseck Mountain in Middlefield and the site of the new Beseck Switching Station is 125 feet wide. The two wood H-Frames presently on this ROW are being replaced with a single steel monopole (typical height, 175') that will carry both the new 345-kV circuit and the existing 115-kV circuit.

The section of overhead ROW that begins at Meriden/Wallingford town line and ends at the Beseck Switching Station is 320 feet wide. The double-circuit monopole that carries both a 115-kV and 345-kV circuit will remain. The 115-kV wood H-Frame will be removed and two new steel monopoles added: one will carry a single 345-kV circuit; the other will carry both a 345-kV and 115-kV circuit.

The 5.9-mile section of overhead ROW between Beseck Switching Station and East Wallingford Junction is 275 feet wide. The 345-kV wood H-Frame will remain and a new 345-kV delta structure (typical height, 108 feet) added.

The two-mile section between East Wallingford Junction and Wallingford Junction is 200 feet wide. The 115-kV wood H-Frame will be replaced with a new single steel monopole added. This structure will carry both a 345-kV and 115-kV circuit. The typical height of these structures will range between 105 feet and 135 feet.

NOTE: Within this section (between North Haven Junction and Pent Road Junction) structure configurations will be different. The current 115-kV H-Frame structure will remain and a new 345-kV delta structure will be added (typical height 120').

The final 2.4-mile section of ROW between Wallingford Junction and the Cheshire town line is also 200 feet wide. The double-circuit 115-kV lattice structure will remain and a new 345-kV delta monopole (typical height, 108 feet) added.

Beseck Switching Station
A new 345-kV switching station facility will be constructed on 5.2 acres of land owned by CL&P, located at the intersection of Carpenter Lane and High Hill Road. (A switching station is a facility where two or more circuits are joined by a series of circuit breakers and switches. Switching stations allow individual circuits to be "switched" off and on so they can be worked on or changed without affecting others.) Equipment to be erected outside includes four transmission line terminal structures, seven 345-kV circuit breakers, twenty 345-kV disconnect switches, aluminum bus, bus supports and associated concrete foundations. An equipment enclosure will be installed for protective relay, control and communications equipment. An emergency generator will provide back-up power. A chain link fence will be installed around the perimeter of the site. Overall dimensions of the fenced-in area will be approximately 460 feet by 510 feet.
